A new legislation passed in 2013 allows descendants of persecuted Sephardic Jews who were exiled from Portugal in the 16th century to become Portuguese citizens provided they can prove their Sephardic origins. Many factors are considered such as the ‘Sephardic’ names, language spoken at home (ladino) as well as basic requirements such as having resided at least six years in Portugal.
