French nationality for children

It is important to note that France, as well as most countries, will grant a stateless person or a person born to unknown parents, automatic citizenship.

Children

Foreign parents or legal guardians or a child born in France who are between the ages of 13 and 16 and have lived regularly in France since the age of 8 are entitled to French citizenship.

Children between 16 and 18 years of age may request to be naturalized if the following conditions are met:

  1. Must reside in France
  2. Must have lived in France in a regular manner since the age of 11 and at least for 5 years

Acquiring nationality at 18 years of age

Applicants who are 18 will automatically be granted citizenship when 18 if the following conditions are met:

  1. Must reside in France
  2. Must have lived in France in a regular manner since the age of 11 and at least for 5 years

Adoption and nationality in France

Any child adopted in France by a French citizen automatically is granted French citizenship retroactively since birth. Note that the applicant must reside in France at the time of solicitation.

As always, The Minister will have absolute discretion over the case.
